WORKSHOP / SEMINAR AT DPS JORHAT
A workshop for Maths and Science facilitators of Delhi Public School Jorhat was held on 19/11/2017 (Sunday) in the school premises under the guidance of Ms. Pratyusha, a trainer of Butterfly Edufields. The Butterfly Kits are hands on activities designed to enhance students’ practical applications with the theoretical knowledge in Maths and Science. These hands on activities will be carried out from Kindergarten to Grade VII to facilitate students’ learning in the two related subjects. The DPSJ facilitator who participated in the workshop found the activities innovative and student friendly. The facilitators who attended the workshop were: Ms. Rumi Sharma, Ms. Punam Sherpa, Ms. Rakhi Kumari, Ms. Jully Bhuyan, Ms. Preety Priya Das, Ms. Pooja Bhattacharjee, Ms. Tapsi Kamra, Ms. Monika Devi and Mr. Alakesh Barua.
Learning by doing# Science Activity # Grade VI The activities on “Components of Food” were performed by the students of Grade VI to enhance their understanding about the need of a balanced diet.They played a game “Nutrimania” where they learnt about the quantity of vital nutrients present in various food items.The students also tested the presence of vitamins,proteins,fats and carbohydrates in different food items given in the kit.
The activities in ‘Aakar Parivar’ were performed by the students of Grade I to enhance their understanding about Shapes-circle,square,rectangle and triangle.They portrayed a story using the different shapes to build their own theme.In due course of story depiction,they learnt about the sizes,sides and corners of the different shapes.
A hands on activity on ‘Maths Operation’ was conducted among the students in the Maths Lab. The students paired up and formed teams. They learnt the importance of BODMAS. They played a game on how to operate the basic operators – brackets, powers/square roots, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.
The objective of the game was to help students use four basic operators in forming a number and understanding the priority of each operator. After the activity the students did the exercises in the Workbook to self-assess their learning through the activity
Students of Grade VII performed hands on activities where they observed the modes of Transfer of Heat.Students did the related worksheets based on the experiment to record the observations of each activity.
THands on activity based on the topic ‘Organs in Human Body’ was conducted in the Science Lab. The students performed the activities in pairs.
The objective of the activity was to know, identify and show the organs of a human body and their location and know their functions in human body.After the activity the students did the exercises in the Workbook to self assess their learning through the activity
The activities on ‘Animals Around Us’ were performed by the students of Grade I to enhance their understanding about the animal world. They played a game ‘Animal Cards’ where they learnt to match the name cards of animals with the picture cards, strengthening the concept of animal recognition. The students also learnt the concept of pet animals and wild animals using ‘Animal Info Circle’. They did the exercises in worksheets to assess their understanding.
Hands on activities based on the topic ‘Systems in Human Body’ were conducted in the Science Lab. The students of Grade V did the activities in pairs.Students performed activities to learn about organ systems in human body. After the activity the students did the exercises in the Workbook to self assess their learning through the activity.
Students of Grade II performed the activity on “Types of Houses” using Butterfly Kits which is mapped up with their lesson “Houses We Live In.” The students prepared different kinds of houses with the materials of the kit eg- Kutcha House, Puccka House, Boat House, Wheel Caravan etc. Through the activity they playfully learnt about the advantages of different kinds of houses. The accompanying exercises in the workbook were also done simultaneously.
